Gaming room LED lights: how to light your setup like a streamer

The difference between a stream that looks professional and one that looks amateur is rarely the camera: it is the light. In the setups we have reviewed, 13 streamers use the same key light and nearly all add ambient lights behind them.

The three layers of streamer lighting

  1. Key light: a white light with adjustable brightness and color temperature, placed in front of and slightly above your face.
  2. Fill light: a softer second light on the other side to reduce harsh shadows. It can be a small panel or the key light bounced off a wall.
  3. Ambient or back light: LED strips, panels or RGB lamps behind you. They give the gaming look and separate you from the background.

The key light streamers use

The Elgato Key Light is the most common: Kai Cenat, Pokimane, TheBurntPeanut, Ibai, TheGrefg and Vegetta777 all use it. You control it from your PC or Stream Deck and mount it on a desk arm so it takes no space. As a cheaper option, Fernanfloo uses Neewer bi-color LED panels. For something smaller, the Elgato Key Light Mini or a ring light does the job.

Tips so it looks good on camera

  • Place the key light about 45° from your face and slightly above eye level.
  • Keep all white lights at the same color temperature, between 4,500 K and 5,600 K, so your skin doesn’t look yellow or blue.
  • Dim the background RGB: if it is brighter than your face, the camera will darken the image.
  • Avoid having a window behind you during the day.

FAQ

What light does Kai Cenat use?

Kai Cenat uses an Elgato Key Light as his main light, the same as Pokimane, TheBurntPeanut, Ibai and TheGrefg.

What LED lights should I put in a gaming room?

Combine a white, dimmable key light for your face with RGB ambient lights behind you: LED strips on the desk or wall, Nanoleaf-style panels or a gamer floor lamp.

Are RGB lights enough for the camera?

RGB lights add mood and separate you from the background, but they do not replace a white key light. With only RGB, the image will look noisy and skin tones will be off.
