Best streaming cameras: what xQc, Ninja and Kai Cenat use on stream

Your camera is the first thing viewers see, yet the setups we have reviewed show more variety here than with microphones or chairs. Two approaches live side by side: the plug-and-play webcam and the mirrorless camera with interchangeable lenses.

The cameras that show up most

Sony appears in half of the setups that list a camera. The reason is practical: its mirrorless bodies offer clean HDMI output, reliable face autofocus and plenty of guides for live use. IShowSpeed goes further with a Sony FX6 cinema camera.

Webcam: the simple option

A webcam plugs in over USB and works right away in OBS or Streamlabs. The Logitech Brio and the Elgato Facecam Pro are the big streamers’ favorites: they shoot 4K, handle exposure well and need no accessories. If you are starting out, a Logitech C920 or C922, as used by CaseOh and Bugha, is plenty at 1080p.

Mirrorless: the quality jump

A Sony Alpha 6400 or Sony Alpha A6000 gets you the blurred background and clean image you see on Kai Cenat’s streams. In exchange you need:

  • A capture card or Cam Link to bring the HDMI signal into your PC, such as the Elgato Cam Link 4K.
  • Constant power through a dummy battery, because a regular battery won’t last a long stream.
  • A bright lens, for example a 16 mm or 24 mm at f/1.4 to f/1.8.
  • Clean HDMI support, and a body that won’t shut down from heat or recording limits.

Lighting matters more than the camera

A well-lit webcam looks better than a mirrorless camera in the dark. That is why 13 of the streamers we reviewed use an Elgato Key Light. Read our guide to gaming room LED lights, and if you are building from scratch, start with how to build a streaming setup.

FAQ

What camera does xQc use?

xQc uses a Logitech Brio, a 4K USB webcam that Tfue also uses.

What camera does Ninja use?

Ninja uses a Sony Alpha 7S III, a full-frame mirrorless camera that TheGrefg also uses.

Do I need a mirrorless camera to stream?

No. A well-lit 1080p webcam is enough to start. A mirrorless camera adds background blur and better low-light quality, but it needs a capture card or Cam Link, constant power and more space.
